The centrally located Hotel España stands just off La Rambla, near the opera house, the Gran Teatre del Liceu, and the Boqueria Market. It opened in 1859 and is considered a masterpiece of Catalan art nouveau, or modernisme, following a later refurbishment by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner. Its restaurant, the Fonda España, is run by multi-award-winning chef Martín Berasategui, who has 12 Michelin stars under his belt. The Hotel España allows small pets.
